Modern day cataract surgery typically uses ultrasound (phaco) to break up the cataract with or without the assistance of Laser. Laser and ultrasound (phaco) induces inflammation in the eye and kills the valuable endothelial cells of the cornea. DepTech is a procedure that allows the surgeon to break up the cataract into small enough fragments so that a true phaco-free/laser-free, small incision cataract surgery can be accomplished with ease on any cataract in a typical ophthalmology practice.
Safe Alternative
A recent prospective study of this procedure had been completed showing that it is a safe and efficient alternative to Phacoemulsification (ultrasound) cataract surgery. The true benefits of DepTech cataract surgery are currently being studied and may show that there is a significant improvement in endothelial cell loss with this technique. We do know that 98% of Dr. Depenbusch’s patient are pain free at their 1 day postoperative visit (an indication that a reduction of ocular inflammation has been accomplished).
Reduced Inflamation
Cataract removal causes ocular trauma which induces significant ocular inflammation. It is known that the more ocular inflammation induced by cataract surgery the longer the recovery period, the more pain perceived, and the higher percentage of endothelial cell loss (the fragile, valuable non reproducing cells that line the inner side of the cornea). It is important for the cataract procedure to reduce the inducement of ocular inflammation as much as possible and to control the inducement of inflammation with medications.
